Artists & Makers Studios Presents
Three Extraordinary Exhibits with Four Master Artists
(Rockville, MD) – Artists & Makers Studios in Rockville will present three exhibits for October with a naturalist bent. “Back Stories” includes the animals, insects and vegetation that have figured in the work of Andrea Uravitch for the last 45 years. “Shades of Grey” features grid-based abstract paintings with textured surfaces using the encaustic technique of beeswax and fire by Karen Hubacher. In “White Hot” Ellyn Weiss and Richard Dana explore climate change through a series of dioramas with background images and coral structures created from wax and other media.

“Back Stories” with Andrea Uravitch will include photos, explanations and stories that reveal the driving forces behind her beautiful and intricate mixed media sculptures, and will include a cross section of work she has produced during her career. In “Shades of Gray” Karen Hubacher shares her Gates and Portals series, in which she is looking for a meditative, Zen-like hum, or the visual equivalent of a mantra. Her Harmonic Progression series is about the silent rhythms of life and the contrasts between the natural and the manmade. “White Hot” with Ellyn Weiss and Richard Dana looks at the bleaching of coral reefs as emblematic of irreparable damage that has already been set in motion, proof that aspects of great beauty and value to our environment – thought to be permanent – can disappear. In a larger sense, this exhibition will be a visual outcry against humankind’s assault on the natural world, employing dioramas similar to those seen in a natural history museum.
These exhibits open Wednesday, October 5 (Opening Reception, October 7), and continue through Wednesday, October 26, 2016. Viewing hours are 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Saturdays, and Sundays/Mondays by chance or appointment.
