2023 Mentoring Coordinator at Arts on the Block

The VISTA Member will serve with Arts on the Block (AOB) in Silver Spring, MD. AOB is an arts nonprofit organization where creative youth and emerging artists make public art, contribute to their communities, join the creative workforce, and design fulfilling futures for themselves.

AOB is recognized for designing, fabricating, and installing large-scale mosaic artwork – all done by talented young artists in the DMV area. The young artists at AOB are introduced to professional development, artistic challenges, and pathways to the creative industries.

The VISTA Member will build the capacity of the AOB Mentoring Program by recruiting and onboarding new volunteers to mentor AOB apprentices (ages 14-18) and Studio Crew members (ages 19-24). The VISTA member will enhance existing mentoring program components and implement pre-service and in-service training, supervision, and support systems for volunteer mentors (and the mentees) throughout the program. Additionally, the VISTA will work with other AOB staff to find resources for academic and career advisory, and secure Block Talk speakers for presentations to the crew.

Member Duties :

1. Review and refine past AOB mentoring materials and structures.
2. Attend relevant training related to the program (i.e., Mentoring Coordination and Recruitment, Advancing Youth Development, Mental Health First Aid, and Racial Equity & Inclusion topics,)
3. Recruit mentee candidates from AOB’s studio crew and apprentice programs.
4. Connect with AOB’s alumni network for possible future volunteer recruitment
5. Recruit new mentors.
6. Interview and select new AOB mentors and mentees
7. Orient new mentors by introducing them to AOB, our mission, and how the mentorship program applies to the work as an organizational whole.
8. Provide regular forums for mentors and meteor-mentee pairs to meet with AOB staff to reflect, learn new skills and strategies, and plan.
9. Explore opportunities with mentors, board, and/or art advisory for worksite tours, shadow-ships, or internships for the mentee(s).
