Submittal Deadline:  May 19, 2022 – 4PM

Overview

The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation(HCDC)in partnership with the WMATA Art in Transit Program seeks a muralist or muralist team to submit preliminary designs/sketches for the two wall sections of the pedestrian underpass at the West Hyattsville Metro Station. Artists are encouraged to propose aspirational, dynamic imagery that evokes excitement and change. Abstract design approaches are highly encouraged. As a neighborhood at the brink of a resurgence of investment and growth, the West Hyattsville Transit District is poised to experience new commercial and residential development in the coming years. These investments will bring additional vitality and a mix of uses to complement the existing green spaces and tightly knit residential neighborhoods. Once selected by jury, the winning muralist(s) will further develop and refine their design with HCDC staff. The design process will culminate in a day-long community place-making event on Saturday, June18, 2022. The muralist(s) will direct youth and adult participants in a “resident paint project”. Bursting on the Scene merges a festive community event with a high-quality paint-by-numbers mural installation: bringing together residents to beautify and engage the Metro Station’s public space as their own

Background

For more than seventeen years, HCDC has sponsored and commissioned murals, public sculptures, and art-centric community events, including the Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival.

In May 2017, HCDC produced ‘Bursting on the Scene’, a community paint event where artists and residents transformed a barren underpass at the West Hyattsville Metro station into the vibrant mural, “Breaking the Horizon”: a locally-inspired and community-produced work of art.

On June 18, 2022, in conjunction with WMATA’s Art in Transit Program, HCDC will be returning to the West Hyattsville Metro Station to organize ‘Bursting on the Scene 2022’. The metro station will again provide an opportune location to bring the community together for a day of painting and gathering, resulting in a fresh new piece of public art at a highly trafficked location.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Art in Transit Program incorporates visual and performing arts into the Metrorail system to enhance the experience of public transit riders. The Art in Transit Program works with visual and performing artists, other arts professionals, architects, engineers, community representatives, jurisdictional arts councils, and to develop projects and performances that reflect the spirit and vitality of communities served by Metro.
