Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) is seeking a Communications Manager to join its team in New York, NY. This position will report directly to the Vice President & Director of Programs and will work collaboratively with other members of the GIA team, including the President & CEO, Director of Operations & Finance, and development and program colleagues.

Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) is the only national network of private, public, and corporate arts funders in the US and Canada, including independent and family foundations, public agencies, community foundations, corporate philanthropies, nonprofit regrantors, and national service organizations. GIA is widely regarded as the go-to place for relevant discussion and action within the arts funding field. At the intersection of funding and the arts, GIA breaks down silos by creating and strengthening connections with, and for, those within its membership, their grantees, and philanthropy and government agencies across sectors. GIA seeks a Communications Manager. Responsibilities include the development of communication plans for GIA programs and information dissemination, including coordination of information from members and national partners. Further responsibilities include oversight and promotion of GIA’s communication platforms, including website; news feed; social media; weekly member bulletin; and blogs.

Desired qualifications and experience are as follows:

  • A combination of education, training, and experience in communications (including communications strategy, publications management, journalism, external affairs, social media strategy/management, or other relevant sectors.)
  • 5 years of experience in communications preferred with demonstrated success in using varied communications vehicles, strategies, and platforms.
  • Coordination of content for publication, including communications with authors, artists, researchers, and designers.
  • High level focus on details and organizational skills required, ability to creatively problem-solve independently and collaboratively preferred.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and copy-editing skills required.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Creative, enthusiastic, organized, and dependable.
  • Knowledge of communications strategy and content development required.
  • Knowledge of design, styles, and publication practices and principles preferred.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with a range of constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, program partners, and participants.
  • Proof of work eligibility and the ability to travel.

Responsibilities and duties

  • The Communication Manager will design and implement integrated communications across platforms to promote GIA programs and information for members and the arts funding community. The Communication Manager will design and implement integrated communications across platforms to promote GIA’s advocacy and organizing for improved grantmaking policies and practices and public policies for GIA’s members, the arts funding community, and other related stakeholders.
  • This role will be primarily strategic and will also include execution on their own and in collaboration with GIA team members and consultants.
  • This role will also include self-directed work and oversight of and delegation to team members and consultants.

Strategy, Planning, and Administration

  • Provide strategic thinking with member(s) of GIA team maintain website(s), manage organizational communications and publications, strategic communication partnerships and opportunities, and other external representations of GIA.
  • Responsible for design and collaboration on implementation of GIA’s communication plans, facilitating promotion of GIA’s programs, goals, and information across platforms.
  • Responsible for management and coordination of internal communications, a communications calendar, and both routine and novel communications campaigns with GIA team.
  • Responsible for development, implementation, and adaptation of collaborative communication strategy with VP.

Publications & Mailings

  • Coordinate communication, inform strategy, and oversee marketing and distribution of GIA publications and research.
  • Oversee marketing and distribution of GIA publications.
  • Coordinate content, editing, and production of GIA Online Reader, Member Bulletin, GIA blogs, Presidents’ Blog, and other GIA publications as needed.
  • Collaborate on GIA Online Reader publications in new format: blogs, commissions, media, news items, etc. and coordinate research and communications as needed.
  • Oversee conference-related communications, including manage and produce conference-related social media; manage and support contracted bloggers and photographers; manage communications-related conference volunteer support.

Web activities

  • Work with GIA staff on all aspects of content creation for GIA’s website and its impact on all of GIA’s activities.
  • Oversee all aspects of social media to engage GIA members and encourage new members: This could become increasingly delegated to a junior team member or intern.
  • Management of social media planning, strategy, content creation, and data tracking and analysis.
  • Work with GIA staff to update content regularly and identify resources GIA could make available on the website.
  • Develop content for members on GIA’s web site; continually improve existing and add new web services for members.
