The BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) Residency is a way of actively fostering a culture and community of inclusion that promotes, respects, and celebrates individuals who identify as members of this community. Artists spend a month at The Studio exploring new directions in glassmaking or expanding on their current bodies of work while using the immense resources of the world’s leading glass museum. Applicants who identify as BIPOC artists are welcome to apply for this residency and for our other residencies.
Transportation, as well as room and board, is provided for those selected to participate. A generous supply budget and a shared studio space is offered for each resident. Residents have access to the Rakow Research Library, the collection of The Corning Museum of Glass, and expert Museum staff. A residency manager serves as a liaison to additional services in Corning and at the Museum.
During the residency, artists are expected to make their own work. Each artist will give a presentation about their work during a free public event in The Studio Lecture Room. One or two applicants are invited for a month-long residency at set times throughout the year. Please see application form for specific dates that artists can nominate.
Please note that due to Studio construction, the 2024 residency dates are limited. There will be additional residency dates and opportunities in 2025.
To be considered for the BIPOC Residency, please submit your application including 10 digital images of your work, two letters of recommendation, a written proposal (including detailed information on your residency plans; necessary supplies, equipment, and assistants), the best months for you to participate, and a résumé.
Applications and all supporting materials must be received at The Studio by August 31 for residencies for the following year. Late submissions will not be considered. Selected applicants are notified in November, and the complete list of residents are announced annually in January.
