Front of House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, Center for the Arts

George Mason University’s Center for the Arts seeks qualified candidates for the Front of House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator position. This position provides leadership to the Front of House staff before and during events, ensuring necessary preparation, as well as staffing for each event. This position is responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training, and scheduling of paid and volunteer staff for the Center. The Front of House staff includes ushers, usher supervisors, assistant house managers, set-up coordinators, and the Front of House Coordinator. The Center for the Arts venues include the Concert Hall, Harris Theatre, TheaterSpace, and other performance spaces within the deLaski Performing Arts building.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise Front of House Staff, ensuring staff members successfully accomplish assigned tasks, addressing and documenting performance issues as necessary, and providing constructive feedback, including evaluations as appropriate;
  • Provide Front of House staff with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish their required work tasks;
  • Schedule staff for each event, ensuring the appropriate level of staffing for each venue, considering the size and demographic of the audience, and balancing the need to provide high level of customer service with the need to keep the salary expenditure within established budget;
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and communicate with paid and volunteer Front of House staff as required to meet the needs of the operations of the Center for the Arts venues and events;
  • Coordinate Front of House Management for events in the Center for the Arts venues including pre- and post-event FOH meetings;
  • Serve as the house manager on duty during live events in the Center for the Arts venues;
  • Serve as the first point of contact for any medical or safety emergencies during events, coordinating with CVPA Directors and University Police and other emergency responders;
  • Maintain records of event activity including creating event recaps and reports for each performance;
  • Coordinate FOH procedures related to ADA needs and compliance including communication with appropriate personnel;
  • Coordinate the logistical needs for events and set-ups in the lobby spaces of Center for the Arts venues with the Front of House Coordinator;
  • Meet with internal and external clients to advise and coordinate logistical needs for their events and communicate these needs to staff assigned to work events;
  • Coordinate required services and event logistics with GMU Police, GMU Parking Services, and caterers for all of the CVPA Fairfax venues and related schedule of events;
  • Maintain the Front of House resources including the lobby and office spaces, the lost & found, recycling, laundry, and staff apparel inventory;
  • Maintain FOH finances including making necessary purchases and processing payroll; and
  • Collaborate with other Center for the Arts/College of Visual and Performing Arts departments, especially the Ticket Office and Production, to ensure positive and safe patron experiences during events.
Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience (typically gained in 2+ years);
  • Demonstrated experience delivering advanced customer service (typically gained in 2+ years);
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills;
  • Ability to supervise a diverse staff of volunteers and paid employees;
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-level customer service;
  • Knowledge of ADA laws; and
  • Ability to work a varied schedule that includes frequent nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience working in an arts organization, particularly performing arts; and
  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Salary

Commensurate with education and experience.
