The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) is excited to announce three new community research projects in partnership with Civic ArtsMJR Partners, and Imani Drayton-Hill! Each of the three projects aim to increase our depth and understanding of Montgomery County’s complex and multifaceted communities within our local cultural landscape.

AHCMC and our consulting partner MJR Partners are hiring Artist Facilitators (local professional artists, performers, teaching artists, and cultural researchers) to facilitate community meetings aimed to help AHCMC better understand how residents define and describe: art - including all the creative endeavors and arts disciplines an individual or a community might engage in; culture - reflecting on all the tangible and intangible elements that characterize and express a particular peoples' way of life; and the humanities which
preserve the ideas and values of a cultural group through literature, storytelling, images and the written word.

Prior research experience is not required. Artist-researchers need only hold a desire to connect with fellow community members, and a capacity to help lead group conversations with local residents.

When Is This Happening?
Artists will facilitate these conversations in a variety of locations throughout the county over a 45-day period between April and June 2022

Why Artists?
Artists are the perfect facilitators to guide conversations that cultivate creativity among stakeholders who may otherwise assume that “arts” have limited and exclusive definitions. Artists understand how to use creativity, culture, storytelling and art-making to open discussions around the complex relationships between tradition, contemporary expression and identities.

What do I Need to Know?
Artists from across the county that represent the visual, performing, literary, and digital arts are invited to apply. A 4.5-hour preparatory and planning session will prepare selected artists to lead these conversations. This session will share strategies for framing meaningful conversations with residents, and explore actionable ways to collect unbiased participant input.
