Day with the Curator

Join Montgomery History’s curator Elizabeth Lay for an in-depth examination of the history and construction of American furniture produced from 1700 to 1825. Whether you live with antiques or simply appreciate the beauty of fine craftsmanship, this special day—limited to just 14 participants—offers an ideal opportunity to expand your knowledge through discussions led by experts and in a unique hands-on session.

Lay begins with a look at Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal furniture, delving into the distinguishing regional interpretations of the styles, as well as how to recognize later revivals and reproductions. Period furniture maker Bert Bleckwenn examines the interior construction, tools, marks, and materials of fine antiques, and covers stringing, veneers, and finishes in a demonstration. Discussions examine the migration of furniture makers along the colonial coastline and how the American apprenticeship practice differed from that in Europe.

Have an opportunity to talk more with Lay and Blackwenn over lunch, included with your ticket, before you put your new skills into practice when you examine furniture in the circa-1815 Beall-Dawson Museum. Remove drawers to look at secondary woods, tool marks, and dovetailing; observe construction details by turning over tables and chairs and locating makers’ signatures; and feel the difference between types of woods used in 18th-century furniture.
