History Happy Hour: Hellfire Boys

The story of the marriage between science and industry and the real characters guiding these new terrors of war making, as told by Theo Emery.

World War I plunged the Allied and Central Powers into a new and devastating type of warfare – chemical weapons. The U.S. War Department created the Chemical Warfare Service to harness companies of engineers-turned-soldiers, eventually known as the Hellfire Boys. They developed mustard gas and other asphyxiates delivered in artillery shells that produced reliable ways to inflict casualties on enemy troops. Hear the story of the marriage between science and industry, and the real characters
