Lift Every Voice Part Three: Juneteenth Celebration

Welcome to the third and final installment of our Lift Every Voice series. With these concerts, NOW seeks to promote a more equal and just society by showcasing music by composers and performers whose identities have been historically underrepresented in the world of classical music. Join us this Juneteenth as we will offer our first LIVE concert since the pandemic began! This concert will celebrate the music of Black composers of the past: George Walker (1922–2018), William Grant Still (1895–1978), Florence Price (1887–1953), and focus particularly on a vibrant Black composer of today: Jessie Montgomery (b. 1981). Montgomery’s music has been performed by major ensembles around the world, and as a young Black female composer, we hope that her success indicates a turning tide in the classical music landscape—one that is truly accessible to women and especially women of color. We are so excited to bring this music to you, and to continue to fulfill NOW’s founding promise of creating a more equitable classical performing arts stage.
Join us on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 7:00 PM (ET) for this live, in-person concert outdoors at Strathmore’s newly installed Patio Stage. The Patio Stage is a covered, open-air venue on the Music Center’s Trawick Terrace. It features socially distanced tables that seat up to four people; there will be thirty tables available.
