The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County (AHCMC) is excited to announce three new community research projects in partnership with Civic ArtsMJR Partners, and Imani Drayton-Hill! Each of the three projects aim to increase our depth and understanding of Montgomery County's complex and multifaceted communities within our local cultural landscape.

AHCMC and our consulting partner Civic Arts are hiring 12 Community Conveners (local professional artists, performers, teaching artists, and cultural researchers) to facilitate community meetings and engage local residents in cultural asset mapping research. The Community Conveners will help collect community-based data on the types of cultural assets Montgomery County residents see in their communities. Prior research experience is not required. Artist-researchers need only hold a desire to connect with fellow community members, and a capacity to help lead group conversations with local residents.

Specific activities for all Conveners will include:

  • Meeting in-person with the Civic Arts team for a training on how to conduct community meetings specific to this
project and collect cultural asset data. (3 hours)
  • Working over the period of one month to conduct community outreach events. (20 hours)
  • Assisting with digital outreach efforts. (4 hours)
  • Reviewing the data summaries created by the Civic Arts team for accuracy and alignment with community ideas,
    sentiment, and values. (5 hours)

The artist-researchers’ responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Brainstorming ideas for locally appropriate arts and culture-based engagement strategies with the team.
  • Identifying possible locations for community gatherings.
  • Coordinating with fellow Community Conveners holding workshops in the same or nearby geographic areas
    throughout the County.
  • Working with community leaders/members to encourage participation at the community gatherings.
  • Leading conversations about local cultural assets at community gatherings.
  • Coordinating with community leaders, community members, and the project team to identify and encourage
participation from appropriate stakeholders and community members for in-person and virtual engagement
    opportunities.
  • Tending to trust-building and trust-keeping with community members and stakeholders, particularly in sensitive
    situations.
  • Advising and grounding the project team in the history, relationships, values of Montgomery County, both formal
    and tactical.
  • Assisting the team in understanding the community-based data that is collected as a part of the engagement
    process.

Three Community Conveners will work with the Civic Arts team starting in April 2022, and nine additional Community Conveners be hired to join them in May 2022. Compensation for the work is $25/hour, for 32 hours, for an estimated total of $800 over 30-60 days.
