The Hopper Prize supports individual artists through two primary modes: unrestricted grant-making and an online digital archiving platform.
Our artist grant program awards 12 individual artist grants annually. The total value of these awards is $12,000.00 USD which is divided among winning artists.
Our grants are dispersed twice annually via an open call. We award 6 individual artist grants in the Spring and 6 in the Fall.
Beginning in 2021, we have increased the size of our grants to $3,500.
During each open call, 2 artists will receive $3,500 and 4 artists will receive $1,000.
Inclusivity is one of our core values and a guiding principle of our organization. We are committed to supporting artists from diverse cultural backgrounds at all stages of their professional careers. We view the field of visual arts in its broadest and most inclusive sense and therefore make our awards available to artists engaged in artistic practices spanning all methods of production.
We welcome applications from artists of all ages and experience levels working in any and all disciplines, including painting, photography, sculpture, drawing, video, documentary, performing, experimental, conceptual, and installation practices.
Our primary objective is to make it possible for artists to fully realize their creative expression while reaching new curatorial audiences, collectors, writers, and advisors.
Winning artists are selected through an open call for proposals. The Hopper Prize is a merit based grant. Recipients are chosen based on the quality of their work as determined by the curators for that award cycle.
Guest curators are selected exclusively through a nomination process to ensure fairness and objectivity throughout the jurying process.
