Power: Words and Deeds with mixed media artist Fierce Sonia and painter/printmaker Ric Garcia. The superhero and the princess…the damsel in distress and the fiendish villain…the knight in shining armor and the queen. These are all examples of how cultures past and present portray gender to communicate stories about social structure, identity, and morality. Using archetypes like these, mixed-media artist Fierce Sonia and painter/printmaker Ric Garcia examine gender in works that together create modern and magical narratives about struggle, power, whimsy, and heroism.

Head in the Clouds: the Landscape of my Imagination with Teresa Jarzynski explores the mystery of landscapes, with particular attention to clouds. Moving from Manhattan to a more rural environment had a dramatic effect on Teresa's work as she became more and more intrigued by the natural landscape around her, and influenced by the many landscape artists around her. There is an inescapable beauty and mystery in the nature that surrounds us, and an infinite amount of ways one can creatively interpret it.  The artist draws her ideas from observation and memory, and then uses her imagination to cover the canvas with color, shape and form. Teresa allows her concept to unravel through process, avoiding too many pre-conceived ideas, as the greatest pleasure for her is in the experimentation and surprise of each vision as it evolves into it’s own. Landscapes, as they are full of the living and ever changing, lend themselves exceptionally well to such an approach, and this series will be a reflection of her experience in doing so.

In the Gallery Hall, Elemental Perspectives: Visions in Gold with Mark Howe. Inspired by Rothko and Klimt, emerging artist Mark Howe creates cradled panels with a labor-intensive process that utilizes layers of gold and silver leaf, earth and mineral powders to create color, shading and color shifting with surrealist imagery. Gold flawlessly endures the passage of time; it is by its very nature, elemental. Its seductive qualities have been known to bring out the best and the worst in mankind.

The exhibits open Friday, August 5th, and continue through Thursday, August 25th, 2016. Viewing hours are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Tuesday-Friday, Saturday 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and Sundays by appointment.
