In this class, students will explore the rigors and the flexibility of the sonnet, learning the joys that come from challenging ourselves and the paradoxical freedom that comes with constraint. The class will combine reading, discussion, exercises, and (of course) writing poems, from traditional Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets, to variations such as hybrid and envelope sonnets, blank verse sonnets, couplet sonnets, and free verse sonnets.
