Summer Student Programs

Presented by The Highwood Theatre at The Highwood Theatre

It's never too early to think about summer!

SUMMER IN THE ARTS
Highwood's Summer in the Arts is designed to be an engaging, educational, and fun arts experience for any student grade 2-7. The day begins with a morning meeting for all campers, which might include announcements, special guests, presentations by other campers, or a large-group activity. After the morning meeting, campers attend their first two classes of the day. Following their first two classes, campers have lunch in groups. In the afternoon, campers have two more classes, separated by a small break (with a small snack). The day ends back together as a group for an all-camp closing activity or special guest. Class options range from acting, singing and dancing to playwrighting, music video production and technical theatre. There's truly something for everyone!

MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE
Highwood's three-week musical theatre intensive gives a small group of students, grades 7-12, the opportunity to mimic a professional theatre structure and prepare a full-length musical in a condensed, intense rehearsal process. Students will work with a professional Director, Musical Director, and Choreographer to create, stage, and rehearse the piece. This year's musical will be Nice Work if You Can Get It.

TECHNICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE
Welcoming students grades 4-12 with interests in any area of technical theatre theatre, the Tech Crew Intensive provides all students with an opportunity to contribute to theatre together through exploration, creativity, and collaboration. Designed to be an immersive, hands-on technical theatre arts education program, this group of students will learn about all aspects of Technical Theatre, while creating the lights, set, sound, and all other technical elements for Highwood's summer productions.

SUMMER MUSICAL
The Summer Musical Production Company provides all students with an opportunity to create theatre together through rehearsal, creativity, and collaboration.  Designed to be an immersive, hands-on theatre arts education program, led by a team of area arts professionals, this group of students will meet regularly to create and rehearse The Highwood Theatre's summer musical, which will be announced soon.  Students will have the opportunity to work on the production at a variety of levels (including acting, directing, choreography, and staging) and will be consistently challenged and inspired to take risks, do their best, and develop as confident collaborators and creators. This year's summer musical will be Monty Python's Spamalot!

ARTIST IN TRAINING - wait list only
Rising 8th-12th graders can participate in the Artist in Training program. In addition to receiving training and serving as counselors for camp, Artists in Training get to choose one or two specific areas and serve as apprentices to the Artists teaching those specific classes. This is not only a fantastic opportunity for older students to work with kids and gain experience with teaching, but students also get to join a professional artist in planning and teaching a class. The rewards are endless, from new skills and leadership experience, to the admiration of the campers around you! All Summer Programs begin July 6th and run through the end of the month.
