Tower in Three: Barbara Liotta

Tower in Three: Barbara Liotta

Presented by Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture at Glen Echo Park

Presented by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Tower in Three brings an installation by Washington, D.C. artist Barbara Liotta and curated by Laura Roulet to Glen Echo Park’s Stone Tower Gallery. The work is inspired by the architecture of the historic Stone Tower.

Liotta suspends dozens of shattered chunks of granite in three dimensions, creating an airborne inner tower, with its cylindrical shape echoed by a stone circle on the floor. The double suspended cylinder and ground circle become three forms of a tower. In an Artist Statement, Liotta explains that she “…found the Glen Echo Park Stone Tower to be a uniquely challenging space.... The piece is in three parts: the inner circle which reaches upward; the outer circle which plunges downward; and the separate bottom, the tower’s crashed echo across the floor. It is constructed from Brazilian granite, which compliments the stone of the building itself.”

Liotta lives and works in Washington D.C. In 2014, she was commissioned by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities to create nine monolithic sculptures for Legacy Memorial Park in Northeast Washington, honoring those killed in the 2009 Metro crash. She has also been commissioned to create works for several embassies throughout the world.
