Get behind scene in the trolley industry this Labor Day weekend.
Transit riders see the bus and train operators on Metro today, but seldom think about the many folks who perform the management, clerical, and maintenance duties to keep the system running. During the street car era in Washington, the employees of Capital Transit Company and D.C. Transit System labored behind the scenes to provide transit services in the Nation’s Capital. Trolleymen at Work tells some of their stories about negotiating labor contracts, fighting snow storms, and promoting transit planning and usage. The Los Angeles Transit Lines produced an entertaining recruiting film about becoming a trolley motorman in 1947. From Saturday to Monday, Museum visitors have the opportunity to see and hear Trainee Bill’s story at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
