In this fun workshop for adults, Thomas and an accompanying guitarist introduce blues singing techniques, including lyric form, emotional expression, improvisation, and vocal color.
Illinois native Brianna Thomas grew up surrounded by music. A graduate of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Thomas has been a resident at the Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program and recently participated in Wynton Marsalis’ “Meet Me at the Crossroad” lecture series at Harvard University.
Participants will have plenty of time to sing while exploring the distinct styles of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Ethel Waters—founding mothers of the blues.
This workshop is intended for adults with at least one year of singing experience either solo or in groups. Ability to read music is helpful but not required.
