The Penelopiad

The Penelopiad

Presented by Lumina Studio Theatre at Silver Spring Black Box Theatre

What's the classic heroine Penelope to do when her celebrated husband is away for years? The poet Homer gives us the "official version" of Odysseus' undertakings in "The Odyssey" - glorified fighting in the Trojan War, clever slaying of monsters, and blissful indulgences of a beautiful island goddess. But what was the less celebrated Penelope really doing at home?

Penelope and her maids finally tell her side of the story in the East Coast premiere of THE PENELOPIAD by Margaret Atwood - legendary author of The Handmaid's Tale. With assistance from her faithful women, Penelope fights her own battles, deals with life in the shadow of her gorgeous cousin Helen, and remains faithful to her absentee husband- but not without consequences.

By turns both warm and revealing, witty and deeply profound, THE PENELOPIAD brilliantly re-imagines the ancient story of "wifely duty and devotion" for our time.
