Women In Blues

Presented by Strathmore at AMP by Strathmore

The blues is the single most influential form of American music. You can find threads of its influence in nearly every American genre from jazz to country to rock and swing. Join us at AMP as we embrace the proud history of a truly essential genre.

Featuring:

Deletta Gillespie:
One of the finest blues, jazz, and R&B vocalists you will find today, Gillespie has opened for Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Lalah Hathaway, and many more.

Sandra Dean:
One of the DC area’s premier female vocalists, Dean is known for her high-energy performances and sultry, soulful vocals.

Angela Hill:
As is the case with many of the finest blues singers, Hill got her start singing in a church choir. Her stellar vocals pack a punch in every genre, from gospel to blues.

Gayle Harrod:
Invoking the spirits of divas like Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, Harrod’s musical ability captures the euphoric feeling of the combination of blues and soul.

Hayley Fahey:
Vocal powerhouse Fahey is a millennial newcomer to the genre, who takes the classic elements and feel of the blues and propels them into the 21st century.

Liz Springer:
Dedicated to keeping the blues alive, Springer combines classics of the genre with a modern interpretation of jazz that is absolutely thrilling.

Mama Moon:
From the Mississippi Delta, Mama Moon embodies the raw, gutbucket emotions of the blues.  From the moans, cries, and twisting of the soul, she captures the spirit of the first female blues singers who had the greatest impact on their latter-day counterparts such as Koko Taylor, Janis Joplin, and Tina Turner.

Daryl Davis, bandleader:
Known for his virtuosic playing in the classic boogie-woogie style, Davis has worked with legendary blues artists Chuck Berry, Percy Sledge, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many more. In addition to being a pianist and vocalist, Davis is an actor, author, and lecturer.
