Explore Gaithersburg at two historic sites–the Gaithersburg Community Museum, part of the rail complex in Olde Towne, and the International Latitude Observatory. Music, science, scavenger hunt, games, and more are part of the day’s activities.
Gaithersburg Community Museum, 9 S. Summit Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
Explore Gaithersburg with the first Gaithersburg Scavenger Hunt. Pick up your instruction card and then go look for clues. Visitors can enjoy art in the making while local plein air artists capture the historic landscape in and around the Rail Complex in Olde Towne. We will be celebrating the fun of playing games - old-fashioned games and then, with a modern twist, the Imagination Playground blue building blocks. The Martin Family String Band will be performing at 2:30. As always, play and learn in the Museum’s hands-on learning centers and, possibly, see a REAL train go by on the active CSX tracks next to the museum.
International Latitude Observatory, Observatory Park, 100 DeSellum Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
Discover Gaithersburg’s best kept secret at Observatory Park. The historic landmark will be open for tours. Bryan Blundell, Architectural Preservation Specialist, will be in the observatory discussing the building and its restoration and visitors can take a self-guided tour of the park and its active geodetic monuments. Have fun with our STEM activities created by NASA and the NISE Network that are all about space and the upcoming solar eclipse including making your own solar viewer and model solar system. Find the Gaithersburg #1 geodetic marker and make a rubbing to take home.
