“Stories in Movement” is a concert staged by Devi Dance Theater and Youth Ensemble. The Sutradhar Institute of Dance & Related Arts presents contemporary classical works in the Kuchipudi dance style from South India.

For more than three decades the company has forged new alliances between musical genres and dance styles in feminine divinity, woman’s issues and the environment. Nilimma Devi’s work “Walk the Sky” was commissioned by the Kennedy Center — “a groundbreaking feminist work.” “Mandala” was praised as “poetry in motion.” ~Washington Post, Style

The show premieres “Aurora” a piece about the sun as a metaphor for inward light. Ms. Devi performs a dramatic Draupadi, giving breadth to this Indian heroine. “Gossamer of Soul” stages the radical poetry of Kabir, a16th century Muslim weaver, who took on caste, creed and gender.

The wonderful support of Fannie Mae, Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland State Arts Council and other donors, has been integral.
