Enduring Beacons: Documenting America’s Lighthouses

Presented by Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture at Glen Echo Park

Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Enduring Beacons: Documenting America’s Lighthouses. This exhibition showcases Candace Clifford’s striking photographs and collages of lighthouses. Clifford began documenting in 1990 as she inventoried all the surviving lighthouses in the U.S. for the National Park Service. Today, she works as the U.S. Lighthouse Society’s historian, supporting its mission of lighthouse preservation, education and research. Lighthouses are generally in beautiful locations. Their unique architecture and engineering varies according to where they are located and when they were built. With the advent of GPS, lighthouses have become obsolete in terms of navigation. Parks, communities, historical societies, and countless volunteers have taken responsibility for preserving and interpreting these properties. Clifford’s research often supports them in these efforts. A few historical items will be on display, along with her photographs, to help tell the stories of these extraordinary places.

Opening Reception will be held on August 4th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Park View Gallery at Glen Echo Park. The exhibit will be available to view from August 4- August 26.
