The Glen Echo Park Partnership and Friends of the Yellow Barn present Ilya Gefter: The Architecture of Light.
This exhibition features ink washes by painter Ilya Gefter, a Visiting Artist at the Yellow Barn Studio. Each piece is a product of engagement with a place, be it an ancient ruin, a palazzo, or an anonymous residential structure. Gefter strives to distill the experience of both urban and natural forms to their essence: form and light. Light can both reveal and distort the forms, but in either case, it imposes a visual hierarchy and geometry. Gefter hopes to capture the ever-shifting geometry of light. The ink’s flow is hard to control; its contact with paper is irreversible. Within the limitations of this demanding medium, a sensitive application can open up its stunning potential to evoke the experience of form, light and space. These three principles are the central visual themes of my cityscapes.
