"Next Generation" highlights the passing of the musical torch through three generations of teacher/student relationships and places brilliant young musicians directly in the spotlight. Joining the National Philharmonic Chamber Players will be incredible young string players from National Philharmonic’s Summer String Institute and the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras as well as long-time Baltimore Symphony Concertmaster (and former teacher of NP Concertmaster Colin Sorgi) Herbert Greenberg in Mendelssohn’s
beloved Octet written when the composer was just 16 years old. Likewise, composer Andrew Norman, only in his mid-thirties, has already been named Musical America’s Composer of the Year and has received the Grawemeyer Award and the Rome Prize, firmly establishing him as one of the leading members of the up-and-coming generation of young American composers. His virtuosic string trio ‘The Companion Guide to Rome’, runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize and Grammy nominated, is a set of nine miniature portraits inspired by his favorite churches in Rome.

Jean-Marie Leclair: Sonata for Two Violins in A Major, op. 3 no. 2
Andrew Norman: The Companion Guide To Rome (2010)
Felix Mendelssohn: Octet in E-flat Major, op. 20
