November First Friday Gallery Openings and Open Studios

Presented by Artists & Makers Studios at Artists & Makers Studios

Artists & Makers Studios on Parklawn in Rockville is proud to present one three gallery exhibit for the month of November along with artists’ open studios. “Progeny - Figurative sculptures from Melissa Ichiuji’s G u i s e a n d D o ll s classes” brings together the work of Melissa Ichiuji’s students, some who had no fine art experience before attending her class. The dolls were developed through a series of body/mind opening prompts such as movement exercises, journaling, and the inclusion of personal artifacts. Each figure represents a significant turning point, epiphany or event in the makers’ life, and carries a spirit of transcendence and reawakening. In 2015 Melissa Ichiuji gave her first of many figurative sculpture workshops at Artists and Makers Studios. Words out Loud in the Compass Atelier, from 7-8pm with Philip Wexler, Yvette Neisser and Sarah Browning will be followed by an open mic. Resident artists’ open studios will round out the evening for visitors at Parklawn.

Artists & Makers Studios 2 on Wilkins Avenue in Rockville will present two exhibits in the main galleries for the month of November. “Alternative Evolution” with Eric Celarier - the series portrays creatures adapted to, from, and by a world irrevocably changed by our interaction. The survival of any living creature is limited by that animal’s ability to keep adaptive pace with a continually mutating habitat. There is no doubt that we have had a significant hand in shaping the environment. Crafting creatures from refuse; the artist lends form to the idea that all future flora and fauna can be seen as byproducts of our existence. “Magic Symmetry” ”  an exhibit with Peter Swift, is the name of a hybrid new genre the artist is exploring, in which photorealistic renderings of objects are arranged in a symmetrical design, often a radial circle.  Symmetry is quite different from the traditional “slice-of-life” or “snapshot” approach, showing the objects on a table-top or in a cabinet, which has been used for centuries in still-life painting. The Montgomery County Camera Club presents “Show Us Your Best Shot” in the hallway gallery, along with exhibits in New Master’s 3rd floor Gallery, and Gallery 209 on the second floor. Arthur Harrison adds acoustic ambience with theremin music in the artists’ lounge and resident artists’ open studios throughout the buildings will round out the evening.
