Mozart – Overture to the Magic Flute
Barber – Violin Concerto
Shostakovich – Symphony No. 5

Composer, conductor, pedagogue, cultural celebrity. Leonard Bernstein wore many hats, and did so with flair and aplomb. As a conductor, he was committed to showcasing the music of his own time and to programming modern works. As he put it, “an orchestral artist is a living being, a musician incorporating all the music that has preceded him, and all the music informing his daily life… [He] is a consecrated part of the world he inhabits.” Three composers, three musical traditions, three musical genres in tonight’s program give a musical seal to Bernstein’s words. Mozart’s overture to The Magic Flute combines current and archaic musical techniques to forecast the comedy and high ethical drama of one of his most beloved operas. Barber’s grand Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, while modern in tone, harks back to some of the most venerable musical forms in Western music. The work spoke deeply to Bernstein, who made one of the iconic records of the piece with the New York Philharmonic and violinist Isaac Stern in 1964, in an interpretation of great romantic pathos. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 received an ovation at its premiere that lasted more than half an hour. A work of towering musical and symbolic meaning in which the most distinctive features of Shostakovich’s style come together, it found in Bernstein one of its greatest advocates and most perceptive interpreters.
