The Victorian Lyric Opera Company presents a semi-staged concert version of this Gilbert & Sullivan operetta complete with dialogue and full orchestra in conjunction with the 6th Great Gilbert & Sullivan Sing Out.
When an actor from a theater company takes advantage of an age-old law regarding statutory duels, in which quarreling parties play cards instead of fight with swords, he accidentally starts a rebellion against the horribly unpopular Grand Duke. In the ensuing chaos, he ends up engaged to no less than four women! This little-performed G&S operetta features conspiracy theories, mistaken identities, and even sausage rolls!
The Grand Duke will be presented in conjunction with the 6th Great Gilbert & Sullivan Sing Out, presented by VLOC every five years. The Sing Out gives Gilbert & Sullivan fans from all over the country an opportunity to sing through all 13 intact G&S operettas (sans dialogue) in a single weekend. The Grand Duke will be a special performance by VLOC, presented in semi-staged concert version, complete with dialogue and full orchestra. It will be presented as a stand-alone performance the night before the Sing Out starts and performed a second time as part of the Sing Out itself.
