Born in Germany in 1899, Werner Drewes (1899 – 1985), was a printmaker and art teacher. Admitted to the Bauhaus in 1921, he studied under artists including Klee, Itten and Muche. He then traveled extensively throughout Italy and Spain to continue his studies. Drewes immigrated to New York City in 1930 and was one of the first artists to introduce concepts of the Bauhaus school within the United States. He is considered one of the founding fathers of American abstraction and was a founding member of the American Abstract Art group.

Drewes taught first at Columbia University, eventually accepting a tenured position at Washington University in St. Louis in 1946. Notable accomplishments also include working on the design of the 1939 World’s Fair building and showing work at galleries around the world including at the Museum of Modern Art, the Kleeman and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. His work is still shown today at many museums throughout the United States and Europe.

In addition to regular gallery hours and special events, the show’s curator and Drewes’s granddaughter, Karen E. D. Seibert, is available by appointment.
