Gallery Exhibit: Fantasy, Sci-Fi & Humor

Presented by City of Gaithersburg Arts and Events at The Activity Center at Bohrer Park

The City presents “Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Humor,” an invitational art exhibit exploring multiple genres. The exhibit runs November 2 through January 15, 2019. The public is invited to meet the artists and learn more about their creative process during a free Artists Reception on November 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Exploring the fantasy genre are Tessa Barr, Dan Ellis, David Heatwole, Andrea Kleinbussink, Kelley Phan & Carol Walsh. Barr’s pieces often originate from her psyche, incorporating universal symbolic imagery and medieval iconography. Ellis’ imaginative works use imagery from fairy tales past and topics in the present. Heatwole enjoys telling stories through his colorful art, which is based in fantasy but also slips into the realms of science fiction and humor. Featured works by Kleinbussink were inspired by songs. Phan’s work has a contemporary style similar to Anime. Walsh uses her photographic talents to interpret fantastical moments using young women as the protagonists in her story lines.

Featured Sci-Fi artists Erik Dillinger, Stephen McDowell & James Russell all take very different approaches to their genre. Dillinger’s imagination is boundless as he creates numerous characters who inhabit futuristic worlds. His work is published in Sci-Fi illustration books and he is currently working on a graphic novel. McDowell, a digital graphic artist, has created an imaginary world where children and large insects roam the land. Russell enjoys rendering representational and beautifully illustrated futuristic cities and outer space transportation vehicles using the traditional means of pencil, pen and color.

Representing the genre of humor are Michael Auger & Goodloe Byron, who both enjoy painting animals with humorous personas. Both artists work in acrylic. Byron’s dinosaur mural project graces the walkway behind Brewer’s Alley restaurant in Frederick, MD.

Please note that all images are copyrighted by the artists and most of the artwork is for sale.
