Gallery Exhibit: "Strength, Beauty, & Sisterhood"

Presented by City of Gaithersburg Arts and Events at The Activity Center at Bohrer Park

In recognition of African American History Month, the Multicultural Affairs Committee presents “Strength, Beauty and Sisterhood,” an art exhibit highlighting the works of well-known local artist Sandra Davis. The exhibit runs January 18 through March 11, 2019. The public is invited to meet the artist during a free Artist Reception on Thursday, January 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A proclamation recognizing African American History Month will be delivered in the City Hall Council Chambers during the Mayor & City Council meeting on February 4 at 7:30 p.m.

Sandra Davis is a local mixed media artist who exhibits regularly throughout Maryland, DC and Virginia. She has consistently participated in exhibits at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park and in the Kentlands. Davis is an active member of the Women’s Caucus of Art, DC Chapter and sits on the Board as the Membership Chair. Her most recent exhibit was a group show at the Anacostia Arts Center and with Art Watch DC One House Project at BlackRock Center for the Arts.

Davis’ work is mainly collage based where she uses discarded papers, fabric, paint, and found items. The body of work in this exhibit illustrates the strength and beauty of African American women and depicts women working and dancing in sisterhood. Davis’ use of paper in her images gives the viewer a glimpse of how collaboration of color and texture create an image. “Cotton” and “Sugar Cane” are 100 percent created with paper and give you the feeling of toiling in the fields and depicting the strength it must have taken during that time. The piece titled “Colors Inside my Window” is a fabric wall hanging highlighting the use of fabric scraps that are hand sewn creating a garment. “Sisters in Words” is a black and white piece that utilizes page from a discarded Webster’s Dictionary.
