Discover the art of maiolica, traditional Italian tile painting. Learn from professor Robert Devers, founder of the Amalfi Coast Arts and Music Festival and former ceramics chair at the Corcoran.
Discover traditional tile painting with professor Robert Devers, founder of the Amalfi Coast Arts and Music Festival and former ceramics chair at the Corcoran. We will create a variety of patterning projects, leading us to the on-glaze ceramic painting process of maiolica, a brightly colorful, low-fire glaze process. We will also explore other low-fire methods such as fired-on ceramic decals, building up a rich layered surface. Working with six-inch bisque tiles and plate forms, students will use ceramic painting methods to create a variety of tile- and plate-based projects which may be integrated into formats including trivets, framed tile paintings, and table-tops.
