Young Artists of America Presents Once Upon a Mattress

Young Artists of America Presents Once Upon a Mattress

Presented by Young Artists of America at Strathmore at The Kennedy Center's Millenium Stage

The Emmy® Award-winning organization will kick off their 2019/2020 season with Once Upon a Mattress in Concert. The production will feature over 140 local high school and middle school student artists from the YAAOrchestra, YAACompany and YAAjunior programs. Also, just announced, Carol Burnett, the Broadway legend and original Princess Winnifred, will have a Special Video Introduction!

If you thought you knew the story of The Princess and The Pea, you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken\\\'s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn\'t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?

Carried on a wave of wonderful songs by Mary Rodgers (daughter of Richard Rodgers), this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you\\\'ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Once Upon a Mattress celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2019, as well as that of the Broadway debut of its star, the original Princess Winnifred, Carol Burnett. Our production will feature the original 1959 symphonic orchestrations by the one and only Hershy Kay.
