The winners of the 2021 Young Artist Award Competition will present a concert of pre-recorded performances.
The 2021 Young Artist Award Competition was held January 23 & 24, with more than 30 student musicians from Gaithersburg and the surrounding area participating virtually. Now in its 18th year, the Competition and Concert is jointly sponsored by the City & Kentlands Community Foundation. It provides students the opportunity to work with and receive guidance and wisdom from more than 15 professional musicians & teachers.
Despite the competition being held virtually, students were able to reap the benefits via live video conferencing. The jurors commented on both the skill level and professionalism exhibited by the young artists, and many felt these young musicians have successful and prominent careers awaiting them as performers and musicians. First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention awards given in the categories of Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, and Piano.
The winners will present a concert of pre-recorded performances on Friday February 5, at 7:30 p.m., with remarks by Mayor Jud Ashman, City Council Vice President Mike Sesma, and Council Member Laurie Anne-Sayles. In addition to the four instrument category awards, a new one, The Carrie McMahon Dietz Award for Excellence, will be announced during the concert. This award recognizes the late Carrie McMahon Dietz for her longstanding commitment to the Young Artist Award program. It will be presented to the participating Gaithersburg resident who scored highest in the Competition.
