Visual arts meet the performing arts in the historic Japanese practice of kamishibai. Learn about how this artform can be adapted for the modern era!
Learn Kamishibai creation and performance with award-winning multidisciplinary artist Natsu Onoda Power. Kamishibai is a style of Japanese pre-cinema entertainment, in which a solo performer tells stories using illustrated placards. In this workshop, we will learn from the traditional techniques of kamishibai, adapting it for our era. Participants will craft their own kamishibai-inspired multimedia performances.
Bio: Natsu Onoda Power specializes in adapting non-dramatic texts into new works of visual theater. Sometimes, she also directs plays, designs sets, and makes crafty objects. She is a Professor of Theater and Performance Studies at Georgetown University.
