Vintage Movie Night: Cold War Revisited

Vintage Movie Night: Cold War Revisited

Presented by Takoma Park Arts at Takoma Park Community Center

As Russia’s war in Ukraine raises threats of nuclear war, memories of the Cold War and the dark shadows of worldwide nuclear annihilation are resurfacing. In his latest Vintage Movie Night film screening, archival film enthusiast Richard Hall will share his sampling of Cold War-era vintage classroom and propaganda films from the 1940s to the 1980s.

This free screening includes a wide variety of films, including scientists warning against nuclear war, “how to” films for surviving a nuclear attack, nuclear test films, and much more. Some of the films deconstruct Soviet propaganda methods, some of which are still being used today by the Russian government to convince its citizens that the war in Ukraine is just a “special operation” to liberate Ukraine from imagined Nazis.

This event is part of the Takoma Park Arts cultural series, which includes free film screenings, poetry readings, concerts, theater, and art exhibitions at the Takoma Park Community Center. Go to takomaparkmd.gov/arts for more info and to sign up for our e-newsletter.
