Jacques Offenbach’s side-splitting social satire comes to life in semi-staged concert.
“Everyone robs according to their position in society.” This is the way of the world according to Falscacappa, head of a bumbling band of brigands (bandits) hiding out in the Italian Alps. In keeping with this philosophy, Falscacappa concocts an ambitious plan to rob a local Prince of his riches, thus raising the group’s station. But, when his daughter Fiorella falls in love with one of their prisoners, a young farmer named Fragoletto, things quickly go awry.
A mishmash of social commentary, slapstick humor, and gorgeous melodies, The Brigands heavily influenced the comic opera genre and set the stage for shows like The Pirates of Penzance and The Gondoliers. Audiences of all ages will find something to love about this wonderfully wacky operetta.
The Brigands will be presented in English with projected English supertitles. The production will be semi-staged and feature full orchestra. For more information and to purchase tickets visit www.vloc.org/the-brigands.
