Film Screening: THE LOST RECORD + Directors Q&A

Presented by AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center

A collaboration between writer, critic and musician Ian Svenonius and artist and photographer Alexandra Cabral (who together form the band ESCAPE-ISM), THE LOST RECORD is an avant-garde musical about art, fetish, fame, money, music and records. Taking place in a dystopian alternate reality in which all songs but one — the "Number One Record" — are outlawed, the film is a love story of sorts about the relationship between a young would-be artist (Pauline Jorry) and an ostensibly worthless vinyl record she rescues from the cut-out bin. When the record (voiced by Svenonius) literally begs to be listened to, the young woman is torn between her impulse to keep it for herself and her desire to share it with a world which has been conditioned to listen to a single melody. Humorously and thoughtfully channeling everything from the French New Wave to Italian giallos and Serge Gainsbourg music videos (with production and costume design to match), THE LOST RECORD is both a smart and pointed critique of art as commodity and a self-aware celebration of film, music and fashion.
