The 35th annual Helen Hayes Awards celebrate the metropolitan area’s theater scene. Montgomery County-based groups were among the 250 nominations competing for a total of 47 awards on the evening of May 13.

Hayes awards go to productions with a majority of theater union members; Helen award winners have fewer union members and are typically on a smaller scale.

Imagination Stage won two Hayes awards Outstanding Set Design: Emily Lotz, “The Prince & The Pauper-A Bollywood Tale” and Outstanding Production – Theatre for Young Audiences: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Imagination Stage also was nominated for eight additional Hayes awards: Outstanding Costume Design-Hayes: Ivania Stack, “Cinderella,” and Nate Sinnott, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown;” Outstanding Direction in a Musical: Kathryn Chase Bryer, “Cinderella;” Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical: “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical: Michael J. Mainwaring, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown;” Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical: Hayes Awa Sal Secka, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “The Princess & The Pauper– A Bollywood Tale,” and Outstanding Production in a Musical: “Cinderella.”

Adventure Theatre-MTC earned three nominations: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical (Helen): Linda Bard, “Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” and Outstanding Production – Theatre for Young Audiences (Hayes): “Alexander & the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Adventure Theatre” and “Judy Moody & Stink: The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt.”

Olney Theatre Center for the Arts received four Hayes award nominations: Outstanding Choreography in a Musical: Tara Jeanne Valle, “On the Town” and “Elf, The Musical;” Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical: David Schlumpf “Elf, The Musical;” Outstanding Lead Actress in a Musical: Tracy Lynn Olivera, “On the Town.”

Round House Theatre was nominated for two Hayes awards: Outstanding Choreography in a Play: Matthew Gardiner, “The Legend of Georgia McBride” and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play: Stephanie Berry, “Gem of the Ocean.”

Happenstance Theater earned a Helen nomination for Outstanding Choreography in a Play: “Cabaret Noir: A Film Noir Theatrical Montage”
