Join BlackRock Center for the Arts for a totally unique gallery reception featuring an interactive performance and installation, where audience participation is encouraged. Meet the artists and mix and mingle with fellow art lovers on the opening day of two new exhibits: “In Control” by Heloisa Escudero and “Pretty Boy” by Cat Gunn, on view from January 11 through February 22.

HELOISA ESCUDERO: TOOLS FOR THE MIND | KAY GALLERY
In this special project exhibition which relies on audience participation, artist Heloisa Escudero presents interactive performances and conceptually based art installations. Focused on interaction, reaction, inclusiveness and participation by the audience in the site-specific installation, the Virginia-based artist imagines devices that can erase our phobias, remove our fears, and transform them into tangible art.

CAT GUNN: PRETTY BOY | TERRACE GALLERY
In this recent series of layered abstract paintings, artist Cat Gunn builds up then erases  layers, creating a back-and-forth of additive and subtractive, an accumulation and a diminishing. Hard edges flirt with expressive grounds and fields of color, creating an ambiguous space that is dizzying, strange, and dynamic in self-contained worlds made up of repeating stripes, gradated forms, twisted squiggles, and organic shapes. The quirky geometry and irregularity of patterns allow for vulnerable and imperfect moments, and are equally about sameness as they are about difference.
