KEEN Greater DC (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is a volunteer-led nonprofit — 501(c)(3) — organization that provides one-to-one sports and recreational opportunities for children and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities at no cost to their families or caregivers.

KEEN Greater DC’s mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence and talents of young people with profound disabilities through non-competitive programs allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals. KEEN also seeks to increase each young person’s ability to participate in a broader range of recreational activities and environments.

A Board of Directors comprised of parents, volunteers and members of the community directs KEEN Greater DC’s operations. KEEN’s recreational activities — which include basketball, soccer, tennis, swimming, music, bowling, fitness and social activities — are provided free-of-charge to families.

KEEN Greater DC provides children with disabilities the opportunity to exercise and build friendships, parents or caregivers with much needed respite and volunteers with increased understanding about the needs of people with disabilities. Founded by Elliott Portnoy in 1992 with just five children, KEEN Greater DC has grown to now serve hundreds of young people with disabilities in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

What is unique about KEEN Greater DC?
