Half a dozen Independence Day celebrations will take place in Montgomery County in the days ahead, all with music, food, fireworks—and far fewer transportation and crowd challenges than traveling into D.C. Uniquely, the City of Gaithersburg’s is scheduled for Saturday, July 1, so county residents have the option of taking part in two events this year. Here are the vital statistics.

 

Gaithersburg’s SummerFest at Bohrer Park

10-11:30 p.m. SummerGlo After Party-Music, including encore by Nation, Dancing, Jugglers, Stilt Walkers, Giveaways, Snacks

Notes: No skateboards, rollerblades or bicycles, no smoking or vaping, no glass, outside alcoholic beverages and weapons, real or facsimile, are permitted. While dogs are allowed at the festival, strongly suggest leaving them at home.

Rain Date: Fireworks only on the next clear evening

Takoma Park Middle School, 7611 Piney Branch Road, Takoma Park

10 a.m. Independence Day Parade, rain or shine, starts at intersection of Carroll and Ethan Allen avenues.

7:30 p.m. Welcome from Mayor Kate Stewart & Patriotic Concert by bilingual folk-rock band Elena & Los Fulanos, Takoma Park Community Band & The AcroAirs from Washington Adventist University.

9:30 p.m. Fireworks

Notes: Street parking available wherever you can find it. The streets surrounding Ethan Allen Avenue and Carroll Avenue will be closed off for the parade. Public transportation recommended; the Takoma Park metro station is one block from the start of the parade. Most food vendors are located in Memorial Park (Maple & Philadelphia avenues).
