  1. It's ironic this should run in February during Black History Month. In the Fifties and Sixties, the swimming pool at Glen Echo was segregated, so my family boycotted the Park.

    • Glen Echo, like many other social institutions in those dark unenlightened ages, was segregated but is no longer.

      Is any institution that was once segregated allowed to post uplifting articles in February? How is this ironic?

      What would your advice be to institutions, entities, organizations, who were once so horribly backwards?

    • That's what is so great about America. It corrects mistakes made through time. The dances today iare a mix of all ages and individuals. Come dance with us!

  2. Yes, the owners of the park had an awful practice. Still, they are no longer associated with the park so perhaps you can look at the park with fresh eyes. The park is welcoming to everyone, and people of many backgrounds converge there to celebrate life. Perhaps you can do so yourself before long. Whatever its history, it is now the kind of place the Civil Rights movement worked to create.

  3. At least one "I met my husband dancing at Glen Echo" story spans two generations. A friend's parents met in the Spanish Ballroom; several decades later she also met her husband there.
    While attendance often reflects GEP's location in DC's NW suburbs, specific events like the monthly Zouk dance or the April Kizomba weekend have me in the distinct minority instead.

  4. My partner, Debra Sternberg, and I are presenters at Glen Echo Park and have been teaching at the Saturday night swing dances for over 20 years. Our group, Gottaswing, has had over 400 couples get engaged after meeting at one of our classes or dances. I was the first, meeting my wife Carolyn in a dance class I was teaching.
