Introduction

The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Senior Program Director within the Division of Tourism, Film and the Arts, Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC).

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job

The Senior Program Director serves as a member of MSAC’s leadership team and provides management and supervision of a number of MSAC’s grant programs, providing oversight of the programs’ alignment with MSAC priorities and supporting Program Directors in policy development and administration. MSAC is the state agency charged with advancing the arts in our state by providing leadership that champions creative expression, diverse programming, equitable access, lifelong learning, and the arts as a celebrated contributor to the quality of life for all the people of Maryland.

Position Duties

The Senior Program Director position directly supervises the Program Director of County Arts Development and Arts & Entertainment Districts, the Arts Capital Program Coordinator, and the Special Projects and Grants Associate, with oversight of all service to independent artists. The Senior Program Director also directs the Grants for Artists program and collaborates with MSAC staff to maintain excellent service to Maryland’s artists through programs and professional development. Other duties include working with the Executive Director and staff to build and maintain local, regional, and national partnerships and supervising special projects of MSAC.

The selected candidate will possess: excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent, and high priority projects; and proficiency with the Google Suite and/or other relevant software. Some statewide travel is required, as is attendance at out of State and National conferences.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in arts administration or an arts discipline, from an accredited college or university.

AND

EXPERIENCE: At least four (4) years of experience in administrative staff or professional work within an arts organization, grant making entity, or a public arts agency.

Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Notes:

1. A related Master's degree will substitute for one year of general experience.

2. A related Doctorate degree will substitute for two years of general experience.

3. Additional Art’s administration experience will substitute year-for-year for the required education.
