Mexico Beyond Mariachi

• Mexico Beyond Mariachi was created over 15 years ago to cultivate a deeper understanding of traditional Mexican performance and culture. Based in New York City, the group launched its first touring show in 2015.
• The centerpiece of Día de Muertos celebrations is the ofrenda (altar) meant to welcome the spirits with a variety of food, water, photos, and other significant objects. Sugar skulls are traditionally placed on ofrendas or gravestones to honor the spirit.
• In 2008, UNESCO recognized the importance of Día de Muertos by adding the holiday to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
