MoCo Lore: Odissi Dance

Odissi is one of many styles of Indian classical dance traditions practiced by diasporic communities in Montgomery County and elsewhere. It began as a form of worship in temples in Orissa (now Odisha in eastern India), where dance was a part of the daily prayer rituals of women who were called Devadasis. The dance form transformed over time as it was brought to royal courts and practiced in street performances, and then revived by scholars and dancers after India gained independence. Today it is practiced and shared by organizations such as Mayur Dance Company, who present this program.

Patrons will be introduced to the history and cultural context of this art form and enjoy dance performances from Mayur Dance Company. Actively participate by learning Odissi moves and poses and have your questions answered during a talk-back at the end of the program.
