Mosaic Still Life Workshop

Create your own still-life work of art in mosaics using “picassiette”! In this two-session workshop, participants will learn design principles to create a still-life mosaic artwork. We will use glass tiles as well as the technique known as “picassiette,” derived from the French phrase “pique-assiette,” a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics – plates, dishes, cups, tiles—and other found objects into the design.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own pottery, particularly broken pieces with sentimental meaning that can be given a “new life” in a work of art. We will also incorporate polymer clay flowers, ceramic or glass leaves, and costume jewelry as appropriate. During the first class, participants will be helped to create a simple design within the confines of the substrate provided and to select a color palette. Participants will work on executing their design in the second session. If additional time is needed to complete the work, participants will receive grout and instructions for grouting at home.
