Our January free screening is the film The Black Press: Soldiers without Swords, which is an engaging historical account that tells the story of the pioneering men and women of the Black press who gave voice to Black America. Soldiers without Swords is the first documentary to provide an in-depth examination of the history and contributions of African American newspapers. Since the early 1800’s Black newspapers have existed in almost every major city in the U.S. Registrants will receive the link to the film and have the ability to watch the film at their convenience on Eventive between January 13 and January 18.

Filmmaker Stanley Nelson is today’s leading documentarian of the African-American experience. His films combine compelling narratives with rich historical detail to illuminate the under-explored American past. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Nelson has received nearly every award in broadcasting, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, and lifetime achievement awards from the Emmys, the Peabody Awards, and the International Documentary Association. In 2016, Nelson was honored with the National Medal in the Humanities from President Barack Obama. His most recent film is “Attica” which is shortlisted for the 2022 Academy Award – Best Feature Documentary. Previous award-winning films include “Two Dollars and a Dream: The Story of Madame C. J. Walker,” about the first self-made African American businesswoman to become a millionaire, and “Freedom Bags,” about the northern migration by African American domestic workers.
